Homework and Resources
Here is some information for the upcoming week!
Here is a link to our www.scootpad.com/mrchris  I have put a reminder for each students username and password in their agendas.

Spelling:
Keep studying your spelling words. I have a page on Scootpad to help you study. I have also attached an ABC worksheet that you can try at home.
Remember, our words are all from the story.

Math:
We are continuing to practice place value and will be working this week on ordering numbers and describing them as "greater than" (>), "less than" (<), or "equal to" (=). We will also work on rounding numbers. I am sending home a number grid puzzle for homework on Sunday/Monday, and there will be a Scootpad assignment on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Extra practice websites:
http://www.free-training-tutorial.com/rounding-games.html

Reading:
We are learning about the different parts of a story: characters, setting, and plot and how knowing these helps us to understand a story. I have an assignment on Scootpad to help practice this, as well as a review of using correct capital letters.

Practice at Home

Reading
Today in English class we practiced capitalization rules. We use the word SNIP to help us to remember to capitalize:

1. S- the first word of a sentence
2. N- the names of holidays, days, months, or things

3. I- the word I

4. P- the names of people and places

Here are a few websites to help you practice:

http://interactivesites.weebly.com/capitalization.html

Math
Today in Math class we practiced our numbers. We call this place value and are practicing this important skill so that we can read and write numbers up to 6 digits!
Here are some games that we will play in class. Please feel free to practice at home!

A Very Busy First Two Weeks

Learning School Expectations
In addition to getting to know names and schedules, learning and reviewing our School Expectations was one of the main focuses for the first two weeks of school. Our learning this week involved making posters, making connections to how each rule applies away from school, and most importantly, how following these expectations each day will help us become better learners. In the end, we are now ready to "live" the rules and be great examples for the younger grades to follow. As a final activity, we each posted the poem, My School Pledge in our journals, signed a paper saying we will abide by the rules, and made a "Welcome Booklet" explaining the rules. See the pictures below for examples.

My School Pledge

I pledge today to do my best
in reading, math and all the rest.

I promise to obey the rules,
in my class and in our school.

I'll respect myself and others too,
I'll expect the best in all I do.

I am here to learn all I can,
To try my best and be all I am.

Welcome Back!

Welcome to Grade 5 Classes 5BB/5BC Blog!
My name is Mr. Chris Fields and I am excited to start my first year of teaching at Mubarak bin Mohammed school. I would like to welcome all of the students back to school for the 2014-2015 academic year. I know this will be a great year full of learning, growth, and fun.

I will expect many things from you as a student, and they all follow the 4 school and classroom expectations. In our school and class, you are expected to:
Be Safe
Be Responsible
Be Kind and Respectful
Be a Leader
We will review these expectations and what that looks like in our classroom for the first two weeks of school. Following these rules will help us to have a great learning year where everyone will feel safe, supported, and important. Parents, please review these rules with your children, and encourage them to put them into practice at school and at home.
